Edo Govt to revamp Public Libraries

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has assured of his administration’s determination to revamp public libraries and equip them with state-of-the-art facilities.

The governor disclosed this in Benin City when he received the Joint Implementation Team on Public and Secondary School Library System in Edo State on Tuesday at the Government House.

Obaseki said the team was saddled with the responsibility of overhauling public libraries in Edo State such that the state would become a reference point in standard library administration.

He said the drive to revamp public libraries was necessitated by the declining reading culture among students, especially at the basic education level.

The governor stressed that libraries can be used to create a sustainable learning environment that can strengthen the quality of human capital in the state and assured that a plan on the domestication of electronic library would be rolled out in the state.

Chairperson of the committee, Mrs. Grace Sanni, hinted that the committee’s recommendations include the need for government to employ professionals in the management of public libraries and the establishment of e-libraries in all the local government areas of the state.
